bushfire safety and electricity

With temperatures on the rise, Country Energy has the following information to help prevent bushfires to ensure the safety of your community and reduce interruptions to electricity supply.

Early season bushfire 2002
This bushfire near Wellingrove, NSW, was captured on film by Country Energy's Robert Walker of Glen Innes.

trees and powerlines don’t mix

Trees and overhead powerlines can be a dangerous combination. You should watch out for branches near powerlines that have the potential to not only cause blackouts but even ignite bushfires, harming property, individuals and the environment.

Unfortunately many inappropriate species have been planted too close to powerlines and are a potential safety and fire hazard if left untrimmed.

Country Energy regularly inspects powerlines to maintain fire safety clearances and power supply reliability as part of our comprehensive vegetation management program.

While tree trimming and pruning are a significant part of Country Energy’s maintenance program, they are only a short-term solution. The best idea is to avoid planting trees near powerlines. Inappropriate species should not be planted directly under powerlines and sufficient distance must be allowed so they can grow to their full potential without becoming a safety concern.

what to do in case of an emergency

We are not the only ones in danger of bushfire. Much of Australia’s native wildlife is threatened every time a bushfire flares up. To find out how you can help, visit the NSW Wildlife Information and Rescue Service (WIRES).
