regional development
One way we can support growth and development in the 1,500 communities we service is through our
Regional Development Strategy.
This strategy enables Country Energy to work closely with our communities, to assist and facilitate them in identifying and realising business opportunities. We will also liaise with Federal, State and local Governments and other stakeholders to encourage sustainable economic growth in Regional NSW.
Our Regional Development Strategy focuses on three specific portfolios:
infrastructure development
Through the development and investment in infrastructure projects that leverage Country Energy's existing core business, we aim to expand our range of services into all utility fields.
Examples of the key infrastructure development projects include:
- Expansion of the natural gas networks within the Country Energy Network area;
- Natural gas fired Embedded Generation and Co-generation projects, that develop and deliver greenhouse-friendly electricity and a by-product heating process. An example is the Narrabri gas generation project (in conjunction with Eastern Star Gas);
- Developing projects such as biogas extraction from liquid and organic wastes for use in gas fired electricity generation; methane gas extraction from Landfill sites; and the development of gasification technologies to assist in the reduction of organic wastes buried in Landfill sites. Examples include the Bathurst City Council Landfill and Hasting Council Landfill;
- Waste water treatment services (or digester methane energy projects); and
- Raw water treatment and recycling services (including network construction).
telecommunications
By using our existing expertise and infrastructure we aim to deliver enhanced telecommunication services, such as telephony and high speed internet, to regional NSW.
Examples of the key telecommunication projects include:
- A Wireless Local Loop (WLL) trial of Internet services on the South Coast of NSW;
- An expansion of Country Energy's existing Internet service provision; and
- A Power Line Carrier (PLC) trial to test the use of electricity infrastructure to transmit data and voice signals.
renewable energy
Through the investment in local regional renewable energy projects that meet both regulatory requirements and community and stakeholder environmental expectations, Country Energy will assist local communities to achieve economically sustainable regional growth.
We are currently involved in a number of varied renewable energy projects, and in association with other electricity generators, we encourage sustainable energy developments through engaging in Power Purchase Agreements - this means that Country Energy are a primary purchaser of energy from the renewable source. Examples of these developments include:
- the Crookwell and Blayney Wind Farms;
- the Dubbo Solar Farm;
- the Broadwater Biomass Facility; and
- the Burrinjuck and Hay Weir Hydro generators.
