 How it works

I've entered my estimated consumption but my account is actually higher than what’s been shown here. Why is this?

The purpose of the calculator is to give you a guide to the amount of energy and water used by different appliances. It is not a true reflection of your account. The cost of each appliance is based on the average franchise rate of 20 cents per kWh for electrical appliances and 1.4 cents per Mj for gas appliances. Due to geography and the number of different tariffs in the market place, your tariff may vary compared to the unit price used in the calculator. You can find out what tariff your tariff is by looking at the back page of your energy account.

I am on off-peak hot water. Does the calculator allow for this?

The rate that has been allowed for electric hot water systems is based on an average off-peak rate.

I have more than 2 bedrooms or bathrooms. Where do I enter consumption for these rooms?

Bedrooms are areas of the house that use very little electricity. If your house does have more bedrooms, you can make allowances for the appliances in those rooms by increasing the quantity of appliances in the bedrooms 1 and 2 within the calculator. Likewise, increase the usage in the 2 available bathrooms to allow for any extra your home may have.

Can I get a list of energy tips that apply just to me?

Yes. If you click on the tips button at the bottom of the calculator, you have the option of showing all tips or only the tips for appliances you use.

I use certain appliances for less than 1 hour a day and the calculator doesn’t let me enter a time less than 1 hour. Why is this?

Many small appliances would not register any usage if we were to measure in units less than 1 hour. This is because it may be less then a cent to run for only a few minutes. For this reason, you may want to adjust the amount of time you use the appliance per day to a weekly amount to ensure a more accurate assessment.
