Payment rates for excess electricity

The governments of many states are now subsidising buyback rates above the retail cost of electricity. In NSW, Country Energy offers customers a buyback rate equal to the purchase price (one-to-one) for systems under 5kW. In Victoria a 60c Premium Feed in Tariff is available from November 1 2009. Details of the offer can be found here.

You can find more information on the schemes running in different states, as well as information on the nation-wide approach to feed-in tariffs at the sites listed below.

Potential savings

Savings can vary dramatically, depending on the technology, location and applicable rates. This table is a guide to typical savings for various small solar photovoltaic grid-connected systems located in NSW.

Installed capacity Average daily generation Estimated savings (per year)
1 kW3 - 5 kWh$280 - $330
2 kW6 - 10 kWh$560 - $630
3kW9 - 15 kWh$840 - $990
4 kW12 - 20 kWh$1,120 - $1,320

This is a guide only.  We advise you to discuss this in more detail with the supplier of your equipment as the technology, weather and installed location can have dramatic impacts on the actual savings.

How the changes impact your bill

When you receive your first bill from Country Energy after having your new meter installed, you might have a bit of trouble understanding how your exported energy has been credited. One reason for this can be that not all of the energy generated will be exported to the grid. When measuring the difference, look at how much power you’ve saved, as well as what you’ve earned.
